Defamatory Language

"fag," "faggot," "dyke," "homo," "sodomite," "queen," "she-male," "he-she," "it," "tranny", "ladyboy", "chick with dick" and similar epithets.

The criteria for using these derogatory terms should be the same as those applied to hate words for other groups: they should not be used except in a direct quote that reveals the bias of the person quoted. So that such words are not given credibility in the media, it is preferred that reporters say, "The person used a derogatory word for a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender person."

Edited, based on GLAAD

tranny doesn't bother me at all but any words that make you sound like some kind of circus freak does. Having said that, if you get offended by a words like that (or at least show that you are offended) you are giving away your power.

I agree with oztgirl, you can let words hurt you, nor can you really show it, or else people will intentionally use them against you. Unless it is someone you know well or a friend or someone who understands the situation but dosen't happen to know what does and dosen't bother you then you can correct them and tell them specificly what your preferences are. But I think it is different from person to person what they feel is a bad word to use, at least it seems that way to me. I know I am one of those people just trying to figure out what to say since my TG friends go by what has been considered by some on here as offensive...
