Hi Loving Soul, a civil union can be performed any way you like including in the format of a traditional white wedding. The difference is the legal implications. A civil union to my understanding doesn't have the same standing as a 'traditional marriage'. I do believe though (but I am uncertain) that a post-op transexual in Australia can get legally married.

I have never been bothered by this issue though. Marriages are made in the heart and not in the law books. A bigger concern is the rights of same sex couples and couples which include a ts. If something happens to one of them, then the partner does not have the same rights to their partners estate. The partner can be left out all together. Pensions and superannuation are prime examples.

The new prime minister of Australia Mr Keving Rudd has indicated that while he won't recognise same sex marriages, he will rectify the above and make it law that same sex couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples when it comes to things like pensions and superannuation.
