I thought I would put a post here for those transsexuals in Australia who want to access injectable oestrogen.
As most Australian transgenders are aware, the only commercially available injectable estrogen, Primogyn Depot is no longer available. The drug was removed from the PBS and eventually withdrawn from sale. One of the main advantages of the injectable estrogen was that it initially bypasses the liver and therefore more 'pure' when it enters circulation. The injectable form of estrogen is also less likely to cause the clotting problems.
The alternative to the injections is the use of other transdermal oestrogens - patches and gels. Oestradiol Valerate (the estrogen in Primogyn Depot) is available in both forms on the PBS. Implants are also available but are a little complicated to have administered. The gels and patches also share the advantages I mentioned above for injectable estrogen.
As far as I am aware, it is illegal to import all injectable medications into Australia (even with a permit) so purchasing from overseas could be risky.
If however you would like to still take the injections, you may still be able to.
Compounding pharmacies are pharmacies that make their own medications - they can tailor make medicines to specific needs. Some pharmacies have what are known as 'clean rooms' where they can make injections. Most pharmacies with clean rooms should be able to make Primogyn Depot injections exactly the same as the commercially available product - 10mg estradiol valerate in 1ml oily solution.
I know of one pharmacy in Brisbane that makes it and can fill perscriptions by mail order. If you know of any other pharmacies also doing this, please post and include them on the list.
