I'm new here so I am not sure if this is the right place but I have a question.

Are therapists worth it? There are only 4 in my state that I know of and only one has a degree. I want to talk to someone but I feel funny about paying someone lots of money just so I can cry in front of them O.o

Do they actually help or are they just another obstacle?

A professional can provide you with a second opinion or even state the obvious flaw in a thought pattern that is leading you to take a wrong turn in life. The biggest problem is finding one who is qualified - and I don't mean the piece of paper they have framed on the wall.

I have seen a few psychiatrists over they years and they tend to be much better than psychologists. I have never met a counselling psychologist or general counsellor even remotely qualified to treat someone with gender issues. Gender Identity is a complex mix of biology, upbringing and society. It is also very common for a co-diagnosis. Far more common than and transgender advocacy group will tell you. This is why I would only recognise psychiatrists. You may need to visit a few to find one that suits, but generally the search should be easier. Also, be prepared, often psychiatrist visits don't seem to go as imagined. They will spend several visits just ensuring your diagnosis and they may ask questions that you didn't expect and subsequently get a little annoyed with - it's part of the process.
